49ers and Garoppolo Score Huge Upset, Defeat Jaguars 44-33

The San Francisco 49ers weren’t expected to do much against the playoff-bound Jacksonville Jaguars this week. After all, the Jaguars have one of the best defenses in the league with a lethal combination of cornerbacks in Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye. But things didn’t go exactly as planned on Sunday in San Francisco; the 49ers offense marched up and down the field while their defense made big plays and even found the endzone. When it was all said and done, the 49ers had their fourth-straight win and improved their season record to 5-10. The hype train behind the team and new star quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo continues to gain steam.

Garoppolo had his first multi-touchdown game as a 49er, going 21-30 for 242 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. He also had a rushing touchdown on the 49ers’ first drive of the game. The 49ers jumped out to an early 16-o lead after cornerback Dontae Johnson returned an interception from Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles 50 yards for a touchdown. Bortles would answer back, leading his team on two straight scoring drives and tying up the score at halftime, 16-16.

The Jaguars started the second half off with a drive leading to a field goal that gave them the lead, but Garoppolo and the 49ers offense was ready to answer, and they did just that in a big way. Bortles threw a second interception that gave the 49ers offense great starting position at the Jaguars 27-yard line. Garoppolo and his offense took the field and needed just five plays to punch it in, leading to an 8-yard touchdown pass from Garoppolo to tight end George Kittle. After a stalled drive by the Jaguars, the 49ers offense showed they could really dismantle an elite defense. The team went on a 13 play, 86-yard drive that ended in another touchdown by Garoppolo, this time to wide receiver Trent Taylor. The touchdown was Garoppolo’s best play of the day. On 3rd and goal, Garoppolo felt pressure from the defense and scrambled out to his left, making a nifty sidearm throw to Taylor for the 5-yard touchdown. It showed the quarterback’s versatility and how he can use his mobility to make a play happen when it seems like nothing is there.

After a third Bortles interception that led to a 6-yard Carlos Hyde rushing touchdown for the 49ers, the Jaguars appeared to be done. They were down 37-19 in the fourth quarter with an offense that had been making big mistakes all day. But Bortles fought back, going on a 16 play, 85-yard touchdown drive. The Jaguars then executed a near-perfect onside kick, getting the ball right back at the San Francisco 46-yard line. Bortles rattled off three quick completions including a touchdown, bringing the Jaguars right back into the game down 37-33 with less than two minutes left. When a second onside kick by Jacksonville wasn’t successful, the 49ers got the ball back at their own 49-yard line. They were ready to seal the game, and the offensive line propelled the running game to do just that. 49ers running back Matt Breida sealed the game with a 30-yard touchdown run on a classic sweep play, making the score 44-33. The Niners continue to roll with Garoppolo at quarterback.

“It was an overall team win today, offense doing our part, defense getting us field position, special teams, it all came together really nice today,” Garoppolo said after the game. “That’s what makes a good team. We’re moving in the right direction right now, it seems week-by-week we keep getting better.”

Garoppolo and the 49ers will face another playoff-bound team next week in the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams defense isn’t as hyped as Jacksonville’s but it wll still be a tough test for Garoppolo and his offense. On Sunday, Garoppolo proved to any remaining doubters that he is for real as a starting NFL quarterback. Next week, he will look to lead the 49ers to a five-game winning streak to end their season. While things once looked bleak in San Francisco, Garoppolo has broght hope back to The Golden City.
