Garoppolo Leads 49ers to Third Straight Win, Has Another Career Day

December 18, 2017 - Author: John-Mark and Chuck Mallory

Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers stayed hot on Sunday with their third straight win, hanging on for a close 25-23 win over the Tennessee Titans at home. Garoppolo again had a career-high in throwing yards with 381 yards, and also threw for a touchdown. 49ers kicker Robbie Gould had another big day, making a career-high six out of six field goals leading to another win for his team. The 49ers have now won three straight games after starting the season 1-10. It is clear that the hype around Garoppolo is real, and he could be the next franchise quarterback for the 49ers.

This game was a tough matchup for San Francisco. The Titans were 8-5 coming into Sunday, and fighting for playoff position in the AFC South division. The 49ers found early success on offense, with Garoppolo leading a 17-play, 85 yard drive in the 2nd quarter that ended with Garoppolo throwing a 5-yard touchdown to tight end Garrett Celek in the 2nd quarter. The 49ers were up 16-3 at one point before halftime, but the Titans put together a nice two-minute drill to score before the half. The two teams would go back and forth in the second half with the game coming down to the wire.

The Titans dominated time of possession in the 3rd quarter, keeping the ball for over 12 of 15 minutes and not allowing Garoppolo or the 49ers offense onto the field. Tennessee led 20-19 at the end of the 3rd quarter, and Garoppolo was about to prove himself again down the stretch. Garoppolo led two key drives late in the 4th quarter to help his team win. With the 49ers down by one point, Garoppolo drove his offense down the field, completing a 54-yard pass to rookie wide receiver Kendrick Bourne with about six minutes left in the game. While that drive stalled due to penalties and a sack for the Titans defense, Gould was able to connect on a 48-yard field goal to put his team up 22-20 with just over three minutes left. Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota was able to quickly drive his team down the field and answer the 49ers with a field goal of their own. Titans kicker Ryan Succop made a 50-yard field goal with 1:07 remaining to put his team back up 23-22. Garoppolo would have just about one minute with one timeout remaining to put his team in field goal range.

Garoppolo started the drive hot, quickly completing three straight passes of 7, 24, and 14 yards, respectively. He spiked the ball to stop the clock at the Titans’ 30-yard line with 30 seconds left in the game. After taking a shot to the endzone to see if they could score a touchdown, the 49ers offense just ran the ball to the left to set up Gould for the game-winning kick. Gould drilled a 45-yard field goal as time expired to give the 49ers the win. The hype around Garoppolo has officially kicked into high gear.

Garoppolo made history on Sunday as well, becoming the first 49ers quarterback to throw for 300 yards or more in back-to-back games since 2000. Garoppolo’s favorite target was again wide receiver Marquise Goodwin, who had a big day with 10 catches for 114 yards. A lot of 49ers fans are hoping that their quarterback can get better weapons around him next year, but Garoppolo is satisfied with how the team is performing.

“There were multiple big plays today…there were guys stepping up all over the place,” Garoppolo said after the game. “That’s what makes a good team. We’re building towards that, we just have to keep it going week in and week out.”

Garoppolo and the 49ers will face their toughest test this season next week when they face the 10-4 Jacksonville Jaguars, who are on their way to their first playoff appearance in 10 years. The Jaguars feature one of the best secondaries in the league, led by star cornerbacks A.J. Bouye and Jalen Ramsey. They will surely challenge Garoppolo, in what will be an exciting matchup for the budding star quarterback. Keep checking jimmygaroppolo.net for updates and stories about Jimmy Garoppolo!

Jimmy Garoppolo Leads 49ers to 15-14 Win in Chicago

Jimmy Garoppolo

Jimmy Garoppolo and the San Francisco 49ers went into Chicago this weekend wanting to show they were a new-look team with their new starting quarterback. In a back-and-forth battle, Garoppolo showed that he could lead a 49ers team that only had one win prior to Sunday’s game. Although the 49ers offense didn’t find the end zone at all during the game, they came away with a 15-14 win over the Chicago Bears led by Garoppolo’s ability to move the ball downfield through the air. It’s a huge win for the 49ers, made a bit sweeter by the fact that a lot of Garoppolo’s family and friends were in the stands to watch the Chicagoland native lead his new team to victory.

JImmy GaroppoloThe 49ers offense looked to be more efficient than it had been all year with Garoppolo leading the way in the passing game. The 49ers dominated time of possession all game long with Garoppolo leading long offensive drives that ended in field goals. The 49ers ended up leading time of possession 38:47 to 21:13. Garoppolo put up a career high in yards thrown, finishing 26-37 for 293 yards and an interception. It’s worth noting that the interception was not at all Garoppolo’s fault. He actually completed a pass to wide receiver Louis Murphy, but Bears cornerback Kyle Fuller made a great play to take the ball right out of Murphy’s hands after he made the catch. It was recorded as an interception. Garoppolo helped the 49ers young wide receivers put up big numbers on the way to the win. Rookie Trent Taylor had six catches for 92 yards, and made four crucial catches on third down plays that kept those drives alive and led to three field goals. Wide receiver Marquise Goodwin had 99 yards on a career-high eight catches.

JImmyGAll of the 49ers points were scored on field goals by kicker Robbie Gould, who was released by the Bears in 2016. Gould made field goals of 33, 28, 35, 34, and 24 yards respectively. The 49ers started their final drive of the game on their own eight yard line with about five minutes remaining in the game. Garoppolo, along with some strong running from running back Carlos Hyde, led the team all the way down to the Bears six-yard line to set up the game-winning field goal with only eight seconds remaining. Garoppolo made a key 33-yard throw to Taylor right before the two-minute warning to get the ball into the red zone and set the 49ers up for the win. Overall, it was a great performance by Garoppolo and the 49ers, who are now 2-10 on the season. The 49ers defense limited the Bears to just 147 total yards on offense, which was a big factor in the victory as well.

JimmyGThe 49ers will travel to Houston next week to take on the Texans. Although the Texans defense has suffered some injuries this year to key players like J.J. Watt, it will still be a tough test for Garoppolo and the 49ers offense. What is different now is that this 49ers team has shown that they can move the ball with some confidence through the air. The future is looking a lot brighter in San Francisco for this team, and a huge part of it is the play of Garoppolo.

“I tried to say all week it was just a normal game, but obviously I’ve never come back to Chicago like this, so it was pretty exciting for me,” Garoppolo said after the game. “It was one of the more fun games I’ve been a part of.”

Garoppolo’s star continues to rise as he is finally able to be the sole quarterback and leader of an NFL team. Keep checking here for more updates on the quarterback and the 49ers.
